Sunderland journalist has been sharing his thoughts on Black Cats star Carl Winchester and his current situation at the Wearside club.

This comes after Copley hosted a recent edition of The Roar Podcast from the Sunderland Echo where he spoke about a range of subjects surrounding Lee Johnson’s side.

With Sunderland’s previous League One fixture seeing them secure a 2-1 victory over Accrington Stanley, where Winchester scored the club’s second goal, Copley had this to say about the player (13:54):

He said: “Carl Winchester – fast becoming a cult hero, he got the winner, he’s made that right-back spot his own.

“Just really nice to see him doing the business, isn’t it,? Because values him, he comes across as a really hard-working pro and he’s getting his rewards now, isn’t he, and getting some adulation from a big crowd, which is always nice to see.”

TIF Thoughts on James Copley’s comments on Winchester…

The 28-year-old joined Sunderland back in the previous transfer window from Green Rovers for an undisclosed fee and despite predominantly being considered as a central-midfielder, Winchester has been playing as a right-back for this season as Copley mentioned in the podcast.

Have you been impressed with Carl Winchester so far this season?

Given how Winchester now has two goals to his name this season and has picked up some praise from Johnson, it’s not surprising to hear that Copley thinks the player is becoming a cult hero at the club.

However, as well as showing he can do the business in front of goal, the fact that only Luke O’Nien (28) and Alex Pritchard (1.6) have registered more tackles per game than Winchester (1.5) in the league so far this season according to WhoScored, shows that he is very capable with the defensive side of the game as well, which is encouraging to see.

Moving forward, if Winchester continues to play well in the right-back position for the remainder of the season, he will more than likely prove that the club made the right decision in signing him in January.
