Sunderland journalist Joe Nicholson has been sharing his thoughts on the recent announcement of Denver Hume signing a new contract at the Wearside club.

This comes after Nicholson made an appearance on a recent episode of The Roar Podcast from the Sunderland Echo where he spoke about a range of topics concerning Lee Johnson’s side.

On the subject of Hume’s new contract, Nicholson had this to say on the matter.

He said: “I think it’s good for the club that it’s over, that it’s been resolved, and that Hume has gone and signed a contract.

“Yes, it’s gone on longer than what I think everyone participated and ideally it would have been a lot cleaner between everything that’s gone on, but I think it’s good that Hume has signed the contract.

“I think if you look at a business that Sunderland did in the transfer window, the one area that where you thought they were still a little bit light was at full-back.

“I think it’s very positive that Hume has eventually signed a new contract. Hopefully, he can get back up to speed to the levels that he was playing at before he picked up this hamstring injury and I think that’s going to be some healthy competition there between him and Dennis Cirkin at left-back.”

TIF Thoughts on Joe Nicholson’s comments on Hume’s new contract…

In an article from the official club website, it was revealed that Hume’s new deal will keep him at the club for two years with the option of an extra year after that.

Are you pleased that Hume has signed a new contract?

No

Given how the 23-year-old, has managed to score three goals and provide 10 assists for Sunderland in 76 senior appearances since his debut back in, May 2018, it’s easy to see why Nicholson thinks this new contract for Hume is a good thing for the club taking unto account how much of an attacking threat the defender has proved himself to be.

Moving forward, if Hume can prove on the pitch just why the club were right to offer him a new contract, then this will be a good bit of business from the club.
