Speaking on the PLZ Soccer YouTube channel, Alison McConnell discussed what may have forced Dominic McKay to leave Celtic.

McKay left his role as chief executive last week in a rather shocking move considering he only took up the role on April 19th after he left his position at Scottish Rugby earlier than expected.

McKay took up what was a huge role considering how poor Celtic were both on and off the pitch last season finishing miles off their city rivals Rangers in the SPFL title race and were also caught up in a breach of COVID rules under Neil Lennon following a trip to Dubai.

McConnell spoke about what may have seen McKay leave his role at Celtic (16:43):

“I think there were tensions over the structure and infrastructure of the club and how it was going to be modernised and perhaps maybe a perception that he didn’t have the full control that he might have wanted to have that there was maybe some buffering within the club.

“I’m not sure if all that is entirely correct but that seems to be what’s being told at the minute, there was maybe a bit of a power struggle going on behind the scenes.

“I do wonder too about Gordon Strachan’s return to Celtic and maybe the impact that might have had on things and just a feeling of people treading on one another’s toes.”

TIF Thoughts on Celtic and McKay parting ways…

As McConnell alluded to above, it may have something to do with Gordon Strachan rejoining Celtic back in August for a three-month term to oversee activities involving the academy, Women’s team, B team as well as offering recommendations to Mckay, which may have made McKay feel slightly undermined.

In terms of getting fans back on board after what was a disaster of a campaign last season, bringing in a good manager and having a decent transfer window, with players like Kyogo Furuhashi hitting the ground running, McKay certainly ticked those boxes as the Bhoys have Ange Postecoglou as manager who has guided them into the Europa League group stages as well as bringing in 11 new players.

It’s a bizarre decision, but one that is still unclear and will likely not become clear until McKay himself speaks out about what convinced him to leave the club he had only joined months earlier.
