Football writer Hugh MacDonald has claimed that Steven Gerrard ‘was keen on’ bringing Hibernian forward Kevin Nisbet to Rangers this summer.

After winning the Scottish Premier League title for the first time since 2011 at a canter last season, Gerrard likely would have been expecting a tougher challenge next time around.

With that in mind, Rangers brought in the likes of John Lundstram, Juninho Bacuna, and Fashion Sakala. But there was another player the Scottish side supposedly hoped to sign but could not get.

According to MacDonald, Gerrard wanted the Hibs man as he was ‘keen on bringing in a striker’.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show, he said: “I know he was keen on bringing in quality. I know he was keen on bringing in a striker.

“I know he was keen on Nisbet, and for whatever reason, they couldn’t get that over the line.”

TIF Thoughts on Kevin Nisbet and Rangers…

Nisbet must have impressed at club level last season for Hibernian, as he scored 18 goals and grabbed a further eight assists in all competitions.

Nisbet has made a solid start to the new campaign, too, contributing three goals and two assists in his 11 appearances to date.

Rangers will also likely be content with where they are as things stand. Having played seven league games, they sit top of the Scottish League table already on 16 points.

With a long way to go yet before the title race is decided, however, there’s always a chance Gerrard could urge his club to go back in for him come January – especially as Rangers are currently just one point above Nisbet’s Hibs in the league.
