Scottish football pundit Peter Martin has claimed that Celtic’s board have ‘derailed’ Ange Postecoglou and his team already this season.

The Australian manager was put in charge of the club over the summer but he has not had a perfect start to life in his new environment.

Early inconsistencies have left the club with just nine points from their first six league games, having been beaten three times already.

Most recently, the club fell to defeat away at Livingston and Martin has claimed that the club had no ‘Plan B’ as the board have not provided Postecoglou with enough quality in squad depth.

Is Ange Postecoglou the right man to manage Celtic?

No

He explained himself on the PLZ Soccer Show, saying: “He can’t go to Plan B, because quite simply, the board derailed him before he even got in the door. They bought James McCarthy – which he didn’t buy – James McCarthy’s taking a bit of time to settle.

“They didn’t give him the ammunition that he needed to shore up the defence and they’ve been found wanting. And you know, you’ve a guy [Leigh Griffiths] sitting there who suddenly gets a loan to Dundee on the last day of the season.

“They’ve been scrambling at the front end, they’ve got an injury to one of the best players that they bought in the last few years.

“And, you know, you’ve suddenly lost your captain, there’s no leader on the park. I could go on and on and on about it, but they’ve been derailed by the inactivity of the board negligence at times.”

TIF Thoughts on Ange Postecoglou and Celtic…

Interestingly enough, ‘one of the best players’ that Martin refers to is Kyogo Furuhashi. Not only has Kyogo been a star for Celtic since signing in the summer – scoring seven goals in nine games – he was also a signing made due to the influence of Postecoglou.

Having just come from the J1 League, the Bhoys manager was well aware of the striker’s quality and brought the attacker over to Scotland with him.

McCarthy, on the other hand, has not settled in as well at his new club, which doesn’t look good for the Celtic board if they were, as Martin suggests, the main reason behind the transfer.

It’s early days yet, but if Postecoglou does not succeed at Celtic, people like Martin will hold the club’s board responsible and not just the manager himself.
