Celtic fans have been reacting to the performance of David Turnbull during their game against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League.

Having lost their first game in the competition to Real Betis, it was going to be crucial that they picked up something from the game at Celtic Park in order to make sure they didn’t get cut adrift from the rest of the pack in Group G.

They faced a tough test against the German side who have started incredibly well in the Bundesliga and who won their first group game against Hungarian side Ferencvárosi.

Things didn’t start well for Ange Postecoglou’s men as they trailed 2-0 at the break. One player who came in for a lot of stick as a result of it was the aforementioned Turnbull, who made a big error in the buildup for the visitor’s opening goal and was the subject of plenty of criticism from the fans online:

“That’s absolutely criminal from David Turnbull.”

“David Turnbull, your time is up my friend”
“David Turnbull…. he isn’t it. Rarely if ever delivers in a big game.”
“David Turnbull would be dropped if we had more options. Been awful recently”
“David Turnbull is a lovely footballer, but if Ange is here long haul then he won’t be, just isn’t happening for him in this system”
“Are we ready to have a discussion about David Turnbull yet? Don’t think I’ve ever seen him put in a good performance in a ‘big’ game.”

Will Celtic make it out of their Europa League group?

Not the best of performance from someone who was very impressive last season, winning both Player and Young Player of the Season at the club, let’s hope this is just a one-off performance rather than an indicator that last season may have been a total fluke.
