Lots of Celtic fans have reacted with anger after James McCarthy put in a poor performance during the first half of their Scottish League Cup match against Raith Rovers.

With his side playing for a spot in the semi-finals, midfielder seemed to struggle to get up to match speed, and it didn’t take for fans to notice.

Having signed a four-year contract with the Scottish club after leaving Crystal Palace in the summer, McCarthy is still settling into life at his new club.

With only 148 minutes of game time before the match, it seems the Irishman hasn’t quite made the impact he would have liked to at Celtic, judging by these reactions online.

Here’s what these Celtic fans had to say…

“First it was Starfelt now it’s McCarthy in the recent round of “Who is the worst signing of the window.'”

@nevetsyerpso16

“McCarthy doesn’t look up to it.”

@KierHar

“McCarthy looks lost another Duffy expect at least he had one or two good games at the start.”

@DavidCelts

“McCarthy is embarrassing.”

“Carter-Vickers looks most likely to make an incisive pass here. Some of James McCarthy’s passing has been woeful.”

@MikeMacDonald89

“McCarthy is way off it.”

Despite the Scottish club taking the lead – thanks to the 30-year-old playing a fine assist for Jota to opening the scoring – these Celtic fans still weren’t impressed with some of the other aspects of McCarthy’s game.

Still, if the midfielder can continue to claim more assists from the middle of the park, perhaps the criticism will subside.
