Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph has been sharing some insight regarding Celtic’s previously reported transfer interest in signing Manchester City right-back Yan Couto during the recent summer transfer window.

This comes after Joseph made an appearance on a recent episode of The Celtic Exchange Podcast, where he spoke about a range of topics concerning the Hoops.

On the subject of the players that Celtic were linked to over the summer that didn’t end up joining the club, Joseph had this to say about Couto, in particular.

He said: “One that Celtic were close to was Yan Couto, the right-back from Man City, and he was invited to Celtic Park to watch Jablonec at home.

“He came up to watch the game, he must have enjoyed his day out and the atmosphere but maybe didn’t fancy coming back, but I think that was more for more personal reasons.

“I was told that his partner was looking to be somewhere where she could work and speak Portuguese, obviously a Brazilian family, and there were a lot of Portuguese clubs in for him and Braga were very keen, and that was always looking more likely.

“But Celtic, I say came close, in the fact that the player was actually at Celtic Park and accepted an invite to come along.”

TIF Thoughts on Anthony Joseph’s comments on Celtic’s interest in Couto…

During his loan spell at Spanish club Girona in the 2020/21 season, Couto managed to score two goals and provide five assists in 30 appearances, which possibly shows why Celtic had an interest in signing him.

Were you disappointed Celtic didn't sign Yan Couto?

As Joseph mentioned, the 19-year-old, who is currently valued at £3.6 million according to Transfermarkt, eventually ended up joining Portuguese side Braga on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Given how Celtic managed to sign Josip Juranovic during the recent summer transfer window, whilst also having Anthony Ralston in their squad who predominantly plays in the right-back position, we feel that, while there may have been some disappointment over Couto not joining the club, they are now in a decent position to move on from the matter and focus on the season with the players they have.
