Former professional footballer Carlton Palmer doesn’t believe that West Ham United striker Michail Antonio is underrated.

The West Ham forward was named Premier League Player of the Month for August after scoring four goals in the Hammers’ first three matches of the new campaign.

With his two goals against Leicester City, Antonio became West Ham’s all-time leading Premier League goal scorer as he went ahead of club legend Paolo Di Canio, who recently described him as a “fantastic lad”.

Is Antonio underrated?

No

No

Following his progress since his days at Sheffield Wednesday, Palmer doesn’t believe opposing teams overlook Antonio, telling This is Futbol: “I don’t think he’s underrated, for sure. West Ham finished in the top six and they’ve started [well] again this season.

“I’ve got to be honest when I saw him at Sheffield Wednesday – he’s a lovely, lovely kid – I just thought if he could add some end product to his pace, I always thought the kid would go on and then he went to Forest and he got his move again and now he’s got a game with his pace. So he’s done very, very well at West Ham and trust me now, I think when teams play against West Ham, they know all about Antonio now.”

After a successful campaign last season which saw the Hammers finish sixth in the Premier League and qualify for the Europa League, West Ham got their European campaign off to the best possible start as they ran out 2-0 winners away to Dinamo Zagreb, with Antonio getting on the scoresheet.

David Moyes strengthened his side in the summer with the signings of Alex Kral, Nikola Vlasic and Alphonse Areola for his first team and will be hoping that these addition can help West Ham both domestically and in Europe.
