Football writer Alasdair Gold has claimed new Tottenham Hotspur manager Nuno Espirito Santo is ‘very excited’ about Cristian Romero.

A number of new names have arrived in north London this season, but perhaps the Argentine is the man who comes in with the most anticipation.

The defender signed this summer on a season-long loan with an option for a €55m (£46.7m) permanent transfer as part of the deal. Having just won the Copa America, as well as being named the Serie A defender of the year, it would make sense for Spurs fans to be desperately waiting to see how the new man settles in.

While talking about the player on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, Gold let slip that Espirito Santo is just as eager to get Romero onto the pitch.

He said: “Nuno is very excited about him, he really is. He keeps going on about how quickly he’s going to adapt.

“Normally, they take the pressure off them when you get a new signing. And then normally a manager will go, ‘oh, you know, he’s going to adapt to the culture and the lifestyle’ and all of that.

“Nuno was very much like, ‘no, no, he’ll be fine, don’t worry. He will get straight in and then he will adapt quickly’.”

TIF Thoughts on Cristian Romero and Tottenham…

With Spurs currently sitting top of the Premier League table – and yet to even concede – it may be hard for Espirito Santo to find the space to squeeze Romero into a defence that has started the season so well.

Indeed, the Argentine managed just one minute off the bench against Manchester City on the opening day and has not featured in the league since.

Even so, judging from Gold’s quotes, it’s hard to imagine the Tottenham manager will need much of a reason to get Romero involved at some point in the very near future.
