Journalist Dan Sheldon has claimed that James Ward-Prowse’s recent poor form for Southampton is due to an issue with his diet.

The Saints currently sit 16th in the Premier League table with just four points (four draws, zero wins) to their name. A home defeat to Wolves in their last fixture has done little to lift the mood at the south coast club.

One key reason for the side’s disappointing start to the season could be due to the lack of quality being shown by Ward-Prowse, who has so often been a talisman for the club.

Indeed, the midfielder has come in for criticism in recent weeks and he was a topic for discussion again on the latest episode of the Total Saints podcast.

However, Sheldon explained that the England international has had an ‘issue with his stomach’ recently, which may explain his poor form.

Will Southampton get dragged into a relegation battle this season?

He said: “I think at this point during the press conference in the build-up to the Wolves game, Ralph [Hasenhuttl] was asked about Prowsey.

“And in his answer, he said that Prowsey hasn’t been at his best, but he’s had to change his diet.

“He didn’t really expand or go into it, but he said he’s had to change his diet, and he’s had a bit of an issue with his stomach, which is why he’s not been at his best.”

TIF Thoughts on James Ward-Prowse and Southampton…

The 25-year-old has played the full 90 minutes in every single one of the Saints’ Premier League games this season. Having been an integral part of the team, he probably does deserve to take some responsibility for the club’s poor start to the campaign.

Even so, if he has had an issue with his stomach, that he hasn’t missed any action up to this point does at least show how committed he is to the team.

Though, considering he has played in all 38 league matches for his club in each of the last two seasons, there should be no doubting his willingness to always make himself available for his side.

Still, if he wants to continue his run of games, and return to his best, he’ll no doubt be hoping the change to his diet will have him back on track soon.
