Former Southampton midfielder Carlton Palmer is not convinced by Oriol Romeu’s recent comments on James Ward-Prowse.

The Spaniard told HampshireLive earlier this month that his team-mate did not even consider leaving St Mary’s during the summer transfer window.

Ward-Prowse was heavily linked with a move away from Southampton, with The Telegraph claiming that both Aston Villa and Tottenham were interested in signing the Saints captain.

According to Romeu, though, a move was never really an option for Ward-Prowse. Palmer, however, has his doubts.

When asked by TIF if he is buying Romeu’s words, the ex-Southampton player said:

“No, absolutely not, absolutely not. If he had the chance to go to Aston Villa or Spurs and the deal had been agreed, he’d have been gone. I 100 percent believe that, 100 percent.”

Since those rumours, Ward-Prowse has gone on to sign a new five-year contract at the club that will take his stay at St Mary’s to 2026.

If the likes of Villa and Tottenham are still interested in signing the England international in January or next summer, then it could take a lot of money to get him out of Southampton. It leaves the south coast club in a very strong position.
