Many Newcastle United fans have expressed their concern online after reports have emerged claiming Callum Wilson could be set for a spell on the sidelines.

According to the Shields Gazette, the Magpies forward could face some time out following a quad injury he sustained in the club’s recent draw with Southampton, with no update as to his current condition ahead of the Premier League’s return next weekend.

The article goes on to mention how Wilson initially stayed on the pitch and even scored, before ultimately having to withdraw from the action midway through the second half.

It quoted manager Steve Bruce’s initial explanation of the issue, saying: “He’s got a thigh injury, unfortunately.

“It’s a frustration, because, unfortunately, it’s niggling away at him, which is frustrating for everybody, but we’ll see how he is in the week, and go from there.”

NUFC 360 shared the article on its Twitter feed and it soon caused a stir within the online world of Magpies supporters.

Here’s what these Newcastle United fans said…

“I have a sinking feeling about this season. If we lose Wilson, ASM and Willock for long periods then we are in serious, serious trouble. Keep them fit and we will be fine.”

“This was literally the most predictable outcome of all time. Can’t rely on Wilson to stay fit… wouldn’t be an issue if we had literally a single other striker.”
“We are finished the man is made of Weetabix”
“But but but Steve Bruce said we don’t need cover for Wilson… BRUCE is part of the regime!!! BRUCE OUT!!!”

“Predictable to all but the amateurs and incompetents that stuff the club to the rafters. If @NUFC is relegated it will be rightly deserved.”

“It’s the same story every season pathetic!”

Last season, Wilson also had a number of hamstring issues which kept him from featuring as often as many Newcastle fans probably would have liked.

Keeping his injury history in mind, it’s understandable why the supporters are so upset the club failed to sign a proven backup option over the summer.

As things stand, if Wilson is out for a while the club may have to rely on teenage loanee Santiago Munoz to fill the void. Failing that, Dwight Gale and Joelinton may also be tasked with stepping up.
