A whole host of Leeds United fans are furious with Michael Owen on Twitter following his latest comments about Illan Meslier.

Leeds welcomed West Ham to Elland Road on Saturday but once again fell to a defeat in the Premier League, despite managing to take the lead through Raphinha – and it may have been by a larger margin if their 21-year-old shot-stopper didn’t make some crucial saves, of which he made five in total.

Will Illan Meslier become a world-class goalkeeper?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Meslier was signed on loan from Lorient back in 2019 during Leeds’ title-winning season in the Championship, but only featured 10 times in the league with Kiko Casilla the No 1, however, in the Premier League, he’s only ever missed three games and despite only joining a couple of seasons ago, Owen has claimed that he saw Meslier playing for Leeds when he was 16 years old, something which is simply impossible.

A lot of Leeds fans are annoyed on Twitter and can’t believe what Owen said about Meslier.

What have these Leeds fans been saying?

Meslier signed for Leeds at 19 from Lorient hahahahah the standard of punditry is horrendous.”

@L_Jordan4

“This is embarrassing, just lying through his teeth.”

@ScottOWorrall

“Don’t know whether to laugh or cry”

@ThomasJones_91

“Wow”

@DehranGibson

“Oh dear”

@JimHutchy

@themichaelowen got to be one of the worst pundits out there. Saying he watched Meslier in Leeds academy when he was 16, signed from Lorient in 2019…”

@Matthews7053

From a team perspective, it has been a less than enjoyable season thus far for Leeds, having conceded 14 goals and yet to win a league game, however, Meslier is certainly proving his ability, having already racked up 27 saves – the most out of any ‘keeper in the top flight.

Who was Bielsa's first competitive game as Leeds manager against?

Considering that Meslier only cost Leeds £6 million to bring him in on a permanent basis, he’s certainly proving his worth, and at just 21 years old, his ceiling is potentially very high and can only get better from here if he remains as the No 1 at Elland Road.
