Of the five players that Rafael Benitez brought into Everton over the summer, two were wingers and two were goalkeepers, while Salomon Rondon arrived on deadline day, so one area he presumably doesn’t think needs much improving is central midfield, with Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure the regulars, and Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin the backups.
Do Everton need to sell Davies?
With Benitez clearly preferring Allan and Doucoure in the Premier League, the future of academy product Tom Davies remains unclear with just 17 minutes under his belt in the league this season, and this has led to links suggesting that Crystal Palace could be lining up a move for the midfielder, according to Football Insider.
McPartland has spoken about how Davies now has a decision to make on his future.
“Tom Davies has been linked with a move away to Crystal Palace. Tom Davies has got less than two years left on his deal, it runs out in 2023, [he’s] very much a bit-part player at the moment, isn’t he – came on, on Saturday late on, just to give us a little bit of sureness in the midfield.
“Just probably as well, because we didn’t have too many [experienced] players on the bench, it was a chance to just get him on and get some experience in the midfield.
“We’ll have to wait and see. It does seem to be we are at that stage now where Tom Davies is definitely going to have to make a decision about his career at Everton Football Club. It could be made for him if someone like Crystal Palace come in with a bid for him.”
TIF Thoughts on Davies…
Having broken into the team back during the 2016/17 season, Davies has never truly been able to establish himself as a regular in the Everton midfield, with the most minutes he’s been handed in a single campaign being 2,027 (an average of 68 minutes per appearance) in 2019/20.
When he was handed his chance last season under Carlo Ancelotti, he didn’t stand out as a top midfielder for the Toffees, with him completing 573 passes, which was fewer than other midfield options such as Gomes, Doucoure and Allan, which highlights why he is the one being linked with a move away from Goodison Park.
