Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield has been impressed with John McGinn and believes he is a fantastic player for Aston Villa.

The 26-year-old central-midfielder has made over 100 appearances for Aston Villa since making the switch to Villa Park from Easter Road in 2018.

During his time with Villa, McGinn has helped the club to promotion from the Championship to the Premier League and was an integral part of Dean Smith’s side last season in the Premier League, featuring in 37 of the club’s 38 matches.

Journalist Luke Hatfield has been really impressed with the midfielder, telling This is Futbol: “I’ve been impressed with him this season, but he was impressive before injury in the first season in the Premier League as well.

“He offers something a bit different to everyone else, as in he can work in deeper midfield, but he can also bomb into the box and pick up goals. And I think you saw this with his goal on the opening day against Watford, he knows where the back of the net is and he’s got the technique to do it.

“He’s maybe not your orthodox midfielder but I think fans love that about him and he seems to have a great head on his shoulders as well.”

Aston Villa manager Smith added some real quality to his side this summer and enhanced the competition amongst the squad for places in his starting eleven.

The club signed five new players with Leon Bailey, Emi Buendia, Ashley Young, Danny Ings and Axel Tuanzebe all arriving at Villa Park and after last season’s eleventh placed Premier League finish, Smith will be hoping all of his new signings gel as quickly as possible and help Villa to improve on last season.
