Former Premier League star Carlton Palmer has hit out at Arsenal fans for hounding Arsene Wenger out of the club amid their terrible start to the season, which left them bottom of the table with no points nor goals three matches into the campaign.

The Gunners have been roundly awful under the management of Mikel Arteta at the beginning of the 2021/22 season.

Arteta was appointed in December of 2019 and guided the club to an eighth-placed finish, before they finished eighth again in 2020/21.

Do you think Arteta will be Arsenal manager by the end of the season?

Of course, the Gunners have been disappointing since Wenger left the club at the end of the 2017/18 season after they finished sixth in the Premier League table.

Since then, they have finished fifth and eighth, twice, and have failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Wenger, by comparison, led the club to 20 successive top-four finishes, and Palmer does not think that the fans treated the Frenchman fairly, as they were so desperate to move to the next level, they did not think about the fact that the club simply cannot afford it.

Speaking to This Is Futbol, Palmer said: “I called it before the start of the season, I think Arsenal will struggle. It’s amazing, we can go back to this, and I don’t laugh because I don’t think it’s great, I think it’s wrong, that Arsene Wenger was hounded out after getting them into the Champions League year after year and finishing in the top four and winning cups.

“The fans hounded him out because they wanted to go to that next stage, that next stage was going to cost a huge amount of money. Arsenal haven’t got the money to compete to buy those players.”
