Arsenal writer James McNicholas has stated just how impressed he was with Ben White after the defender made his first competitive appearance at the Emirates.

White signed for the Gunner’s over the summer for a reported fee in the region of £50m and made his debut in the 2-0 away loss to Brentford. In that game, however, Arsenal were without a number of key first-team players.

With Mikel Arteta able to name a much stronger starting lineup against Norwich City – and with White returning to the team – the north London side claimed their first victory of the season in a 1-0 win over Norwich.

While talking on the Arsecast Extra Arsenal podcast, McNicholas claimed to have been ‘really impressed’ by White, even comparing his passing ability to David Luiz.

He said (15:39): “To be honest, I was really impressed by his quality on the ball, I don’t think I realised that his technical level was quite high as it appears to be.

“I mean, the chip pass that you mentioned was one of a couple of passes he played in that first half that we’re, you know, the kind of pass we were seeing from David Luiz last season. And that made him a really integral part of our team.”

TIF thoughts on Ben White and Arsenal…

After losing all three of their first games of the new Premier League campaign, Arsenal really needed to come away with a win against Norwich.

Will Arsenal qualify for European this season?

Yes

Yes

No

No

A goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was ultimately enough to get the job done, highlighting the importance of the Gunner’s first clean sheet of the season.

At the heart of the defence, White evidently helped his side win the game and even had three key passes (passes that lead directly to a shot for a teammate).

If he can keep up this kind of form, he may well help Arsenal climb up the table they fight for a return to European this season.
