Sunderland journalist Phil Smith has been sharing his thoughts on Black Cats striker Nathan Broadhead and his display for Lee Johnson’s side during their recent 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic in the Carabao Cup.

This comes after Smith made an appearance on a recent episode of The Roar Podcast from the Sunderland Echo, where he spoke about a variety of subjects surrounding the Wearside club.

On the subject of their midweek win against Wigan, where Broadhead played through the entire match and managed to grab himself a goal, Smith had this to say about his performance, in particular.

He said: “I was really impressed with his persistence, I think.

“Obviously, the quality of the finish is notable and it was an excellent finish, but I thought that whereas Wigan in most parts of the pitch were really, really poor, I actually thought their two best players were their centre-halves and certainly Curtis Tilt, who we’ve seen at this level before – we know he’s a good defender, and I thought he was excellent, very aggressive, very powerful, and very intelligent as well, so, it wasn’t like Broadhead had it all his own way.

“I thought he showed good intelligence, he’s never going to be someone who wins big aerial duels like Ross Stewart does, but I thought he made some excellent runs throughout the game, and I thought he did actually use his body pretty well and create some opportunities for teammates.”

TIF Thoughts on Phil Smith’s comments on Broadhead and his performance against Wigan…

Broadhead joined Sunderland on a loan deal from Everton’s U23 side back in August. Since then, the 23-year-old striker, who is currently valued at £450k according to Transfermarkt, has already made five appearances for the Black Cats, but his midweek strike was his first for the club.

As well as getting his name on the scoresheet, the fact that Chronicle Live gave the striker a match rating of 7/10 saying that he put in an “impressive performance” against Wigan, suggests that it was a rather successful night for the player.

In our view, while it’s great for the striker that he’s managed to score his first goal for the club, he will now have to continue to play well and keep scoring if he wants to keep his place in the side.
