Former footballer Steve Howey believes that Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady is one of the best players in League One.

Sunderland are now in their fourth consecutive campaign in the third tier of English football and will be hoping that under manager Lee Johnson, they can get promoted back to the Championship this season.

The Black Cats have brought four new players to the Stadium of Light in this transfer window, with Alex Pritchard, Corry Evans, Jacob Carney and Callum Doyle all arriving on Wearside.

After not being in the squad for the first half of last season, Aiden McGeady returned after Christmas and put in some terrific displays, which saw him end the campaign with six goals and 17 assists in all competitions.

And Howey was full of praise for McGeady, telling This is Futbol: “I mean, he’s got that quality; I think Sunderland have been in there for a few seasons now and he’s been in the team of the season every season, very gifted player.”

The 35-year-old recently signed a new one-year contract with Sunderland, telling the Chronicle Live: “I’m just really happy that I could get it sorted. I didn’t want to leave. I made that quite clear.”

McGeady was also recently appointed Sunderland’s vice-captain for the upcoming season.
