Sunderland fans have been reacting to the performance of Josh Hawkes in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The Black Cats came into the game off the back of a 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic in League One, but straight away attention was focused on midweek matters as they took on Port Vale in the Carabao Cup.

The game wasn’t that much of a thriller during the first half, with perhaps the biggest talking point being the home side having a goal taken away from them for a foul in the buildup on Sunderland keeper Anthony Patterson.

That all changed just before half-time though as the Black Cats took the lead through Hawkes, having been set up by debutant Alex Pritchard he fired the ball low into the far corner with a rather emphatic finish.

It was a goal that was met with rapturous praise from the supporters that were watching online:

“Gan on youngen!!! Get a few more.”

“My generational talent”
“What a player”
“MASTERCLASS”
“Generational”
“BETTER THAN MESSI”

Will Sunderland earn promotion this season?

A special occasion as it was in fact his first goal for the club, now we wait and see how many more of them he’s got in his locker for us.
