A whole host of Celtic fans appear to be delighted on Twitter with the latest transfer update surrounding Ko Itakura.

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, Celtic are interested in the defender, while Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is not thought to have him in his plans – and the two clubs have ‘started official talks’.

The Japanese international signed for City back in 2019 from Kawasaki Frontale but is still yet to make an appearance for the English champions.

Itakura was part of the Japan squad that almost picked up a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as he partnered Tottenham Hotspur target Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Itakura spent last season on loan in the Eredivisie with FC Groningen, where he managed to rack up 36 appearances and popped up with one goal and one assist, as he helped the Dutch side finish seventh in the league.

Having cost Man City less than £1m and only having one year left on his contract, Celtic may see the signing of Itakura as a potential bargain if the Citizens will sanction his sale.
