Charlie Adam has outlined what he thinks Celtic will do as Ryan Christie enters the final stages of his contract.

Christie’s current contract expires in January, so he will be able to leave the club for free – midway through the season – at the beginning of 2022.

Adam believes that the Bhoys may be willing to let this happen, though, as the 26-year-old’s form is more valuable to them right now than any fee they could receive for Christie if they were to sell him in the current transfer window.

Addressing the matter on The PLZ Football Show, Adam said: “I think they can afford to give him the six months, because he’s playing as well as he did – well, he’s played better than he did last season.

“So with six months to go on his contract, they can worry about bringing somebody in, in January. Or, within that period from 1st September to January, they can try and hammer out a deal and say, ‘listen, we’re desperate to keep you, what are you looking for? This is the deal. We’ll give you it because what you’ve done on this start to the season, you’ve been excellent, you’ve not let your head go down’.

“I think Celtic would probably rather lose him for nothing than get rid of him in this window. Because he is still a very good player for Celtic.”

TIF Thoughts on Ryan Christie and Celtic…

Christie has been a valuable player to Celtic in recent seasons, registering over 40 goals in more than 140 appearances for the Scottish club.

Despite his contract situation being so perilous, Ange Postecoglou has still chosen the Scotland international on a number of occasions so far this term.

Burnley and Southampton are some of the names linked with a move for the 26-year-old, with claims he could leave for as little as £5m.

At such a low price, it’s understandable that Celtic wouldn’t want to see Christie leave, but if he doesn’t sign a new contract, they will receive nothing for the midfielder when he leaves in January.
