Carlton Palmer believes that Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard is the type of player that Southampton will be targeting this summer.

With Southampton in danger of losing talisman and top goalscorer Danny Ings after the frontman rejected Saints’ latest contract offer, Ralph Hasenhuttl is likely to need at least one new striker.

Ings is out of contract next summer and has made his feelings clear about wanting to play in the Champions League.

Should Ings end up departing before this month’s deadline, it would leave the Austrian with just Che Adams and 34-year-old Shane Long as his only recognised strikers.

And according to The Scottish Sun, Southampton are in the race to sign Edouard, who’s in a similar position to Ings with his deal running out next summer.

The Frenchman has scored 84 goals across the previous four years with the Hoops and has been touted to be available for just £10m, having entered the final 12 months of his contract.

And Palmer exclusively told This is Futbol that his former side should be all over it:

“He’s the type of player that they’ll be looking at, we know they haven’t got millions and millions to spend.

“But, if they get the money for Ward-Prowse, like I said for £35-40m, they might be able to bring him in for £10-£15m, and that would be good business. That’s the sort of business they’ve got to do.”
