Hamish Carton has been discussing the possibility of Celtic landing Georgios Giakoumakis before the end of the transfer window on the 67 Hail Hail YouTube channel.

Despite the immediate success of new signing Kyogo Furuhashi, Celtic do not appear to be done in their pursuit of signing another striker with links to Giakoumakis still lurking, and he would arrive with an impressive record in front of goal having scored 26 times in the Dutch Eredivisie for VVV-Venlo last season.

Despite rumours suggesting that Odsonne Edouard would be leaving Celtic this summer, having been linked with English Premier League clubs such as Leicester City and Crystal Palace, the Frenchman remains at Celtic Park, and has even managed to score in their previous two SPFL victories.

Carton spoke about the possible signing of Giakoumakis.

“Georgios Giakoumakis seems like it’s not quite as much of a done deal as Liam Scales, although VVV-Venlo, the Dutch second-tier side who he currently plays for, say they want to get the deal done as soon as possible.

“They don’t want it going right to the wire of the transfer window – I’m assuming that’s because they want to be able to replace him without having to have a mad rush in the final few hours of the window.

“So we’re in for him, Werder Bremen are still in for him, I think there’s going to be other clubs as well, given his scoring record in the Eredivisie last season – a reminder that he was the top scorer with 26 goals in 30 matches. He’s going to be much sought after.

“Depending on who you want to believe in terms of Greek journalists, some are saying that he’s pretty much guaranteed to go to Germany; others are saying that Celtic are still his preferred destination.

“I don’t really know, I don’t think many people outwith his close circle and at the clubs really know what’s going on. I just want us to get another striker in. Giakoumakis certainly looks like he would score goals for us based on last season.

“But if it’s not going to be him and it’s not going to be Thomas Henry, then surely we’ve got other players on the list that we can go and get pretty quickly in the final week of the transfer window.”

TIF Thoughts on Celtic’s transfer business…

It has been a very productive and sensible transfer window under Ange Postecoglou, which has seen them sign eight players in key areas all over the pitch, but they still appear to be keeping some irons in the fire in the striker department, especially with Edouard’s future still hanging in the balance.

There are just a few days left of the transfer window, and with Celtic in Europa League action this week, they do not have a lot of free time to be making deals happen, which could lead to a late scramble to finalise those players that can help them regain the title from Rangers.
