It is believed the Bhoys were looking at the Japanese defender as an option in defence this summer and keeping an eye on him during his time at the Olympic Games.

The 24-year-old spent last season out on loan with FC Groningen, however, it looks unlikely he will be playing his football at Celtic Park this season.

Celtic fans flocked to Twitter to share their frustration at the claim to emerge from the Sky Sports reporter on Tuesday afternoon.

What exactly did these Celtic fans have to say?

“That’s ma Tuesday ruined”

“Pain”
“Disappointing if true. He would have been awesome.”
“Sad”
“BOOOOOO”
“NNNNooooooooo!!!!!!”

Itakura joined Pep Guardiola’s side back in 2019 for a fee believed to be in the region of £990k, but he is yet to play a single game for the Premier League champions (via Transfermarkt).

Reports suggest Celtic are closing in on another defender, however, these Hoops fans have been left disappointed by the latest Itakura development.
