It has been reported Spurs have submitted a bid worth in the region of €50m (£42.7m) on Friday for the 23-year-old centre-back, however, they are awaiting a response from the Serie A club.

Tottenham have seen their most experienced defender, Toby Alderweireld, depart the club already this summer, and with just a matter of days now until the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, they are still searching for his replacement.

Disucssing the Argentine’s future with the Serie A club, Romano had the following to say on the matter.

“Tottenham on Friday made an official bid to Atalanta, it was an improved bid around €50m. So they’re convinced that this is the perfect bid to sign this player. They are not prepared to offer more than this.

“So they are optimistic, but at the moment, Atalanta has not accepted yet this proposal – Tottenham thinks just because [Atalanta] are looking for the replacement before selling Cristian Romero.

“Today, the player is back in training with Atalanta and he’s going to talk directly with the manager [Gian Piero] Gasperini, with the board, he’s going to tell them that he wants to join Tottenham. only wants to go to Tottenham, and let’s see if Atalanta today or maybe tomorrow will accept the proposal from Spurs.”

TIF Thoughts on Romero’s future…

Spurs were plagued with defensive errors last season, so we feel like they need a dominant centre-back who can turn around their defensive form from the 2020/21 season.

The 23-year-old is coming into the 2021/22 campaign on the back of an MVP season in Serie A, which saw him crowned as the league’s best defender.

Despite still being fairly young himself, Romero has shown signs of being a top-class centre-back with both Atalanta and Argentina, playing prominent roles for both sides.

However, if this potential deal does cost in the region of £42.7m, how much does that leave Spurs to spend on their reported wish to sign another centre-back?
