On the latest episode of the Gold & Guest talk Tottenham podcast, Alasdair Gold has been discussing the club’s current situation at centre-back.
Do you think Dier will start against Man City?
However, coming into the summer transfer window, it was reported Spurs were expecting to sign two new centre-backs to bolster their defence.
Discussing what the Tottenham defence could look like in their opening game of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign against Manchester City, Gold had the following to say.
“This is where I’m really going to upset people. I’d be surprised if Eric Dier isn’t starting that first game against Man City.
“I’d be surprised, which I’m guessing at the start of the window if I’d said that, you might find me strung up somewhere in a town square by an angry mob.”
TIF Thoughts on Tottenham’s defence…
If Gold’s concerns over the potential reaction to Eric Dier starting Spurs’ first Premier League game are anything to go by, the latest claims emerging on Spurs’ pursuit of Romero will come as welcome news as he will likely be expected to lead the Tottenham backline given the potential deal is expected to cost in the region of €50m (£42.7m), possibly rising with add-ons.
However, given the financial struggles expected this summer, it makes us question how much of their remaining transfer budget Spurs will have to spend on another centre-back.
You would imagine Sanchez’s future with the Lilywhites could play a big role in whether they can afford to sign another centre-back this summer.
The Colombian is said to be on Fabio Paratici’s list to sell this summer and any potential generated revenue from him may go into signing another defender.
