Broadcaster and former Newcastle United commentator Mick Lowes has discussed the importance of Callum Wilson ahead of the upcoming season.

The 29-year-old enjoyed a pretty successful first season up on Tyneside following his £20m move from Bournemouth, scoring 12 goals and chipping in with five assists as Newcastle United ultimately finished 12th in the table.

Starting with an easy one, what number does Wilson wear for Newcastle?

He was forced to carry the load somewhat when it came to goals, as he was the only player in the Newcastle United squad that managed to reach double figures during the course of the campaign. And that’s why, speaking on NUFC Matters, Lowes felt the need to stress the importance of Wilson, because he could have a major impact on where Newcastle United finish this season:

“The absolute diamond, the diamond that Newcastle have is Callum Wilson. An absolute diamond.

“A) We should make sure we keep him, but B) we should make sure that he gets the service, and most importantly, keep him fit.

“Because Callum Wilson is going to be the difference between a team that finishes 15th, 14th and potentially finishes maybe 8th or 9th. He’s that good, for me.”

Whilst it is certainly high praise when it comes how Lowes feels about Wilson, something that he very much deserves after an impressive first season at the club, he shouldn’t be asked to carry it all out on his own.

Newcastle were more or less bailed out by the form of Joe Willock towards the end of last season as his goals played a huge part in keeping them up, and that should symbolise that Wilson cannot do all the work up front, and that the club need help from other areas in case Wilson isn’t able to perform, either through a potential injury or a bad run of form.

So whilst Lowes talks about getting service to help Wilson get him goals, which would certainly help, Newcastle also need to start thinking about how to get goals from other players to supplement the team rather than relying solely on him to save them this season.
