Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has provided an update on Steve Bruce and his contract at the club.

To say that the relationship between Bruce and the Newcastle United fans is strained would be something of an understatement, with animosity brewing ever since he was appointed to replace Rafael Benitez in the summer of 2019, with things getting incredibly toxic at certain points over his reign there.

There have been some reports suggesting that Bruce is set to be handed a new three-year deal at the club, but speaking about the situation on NUFC Matters, Kennedy clarified the situation by hinting that although there has been an extension, it isn’t an extension in the traditional sense:

“It doesn’t sound like it’s a new three-year deal, but there definitely has been an extension. And it would suggest that there’s a roll-on, but we haven’t had any official confirmation.

“I don’t think it’s a new deal that he’s signed, it’s something that runs along as the current one, and that would suggest it’s probably – look I’m guessing here, but – keep Newcastle United up and it rolls on to the next season, or hit certain targets and it rolls on to the next season and that’s where we currently are, that Steve Bruce is contracted for this season and beyond.”

Should NUFC move on from Steve Bruce?

Whilst he might not be pulling up many trees at the club, at the end of the day, Bruce is only doing what Mike Ashley asks of him, and it’s the owner that doesn’t have much when it comes to ambition for Newcastle United.

So although there might be anger from the fans when it comes to Bruce and the way he handles things at the club, he has been relatively successful when it comes to the limited ambition of the owner, and at the end of the day, it’s his decision on whether he wants to keep Bruce for longer.

So when all that is factored in, no matter how it is shaped when it comes to the length of it, you can’t deny that Bruce, at least from the club’s perspective, fully deserves any new deal that Ashley offers him.
