Newcastle United fans have been reacting to the latest transfer news to come out of the club.

The club have announced that defender Kell Watts has joined League One side Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season. It’s a league that the defender will know well having spent last season in the same tier with Plymouth Argyle, except this time he won’t have to travel so far to his new team.

Nice easy one to start off with, which club did Newcastle United sign Shearer from in 1996?

Watts had actually made some inroads into the first-team picture during pre-season, and even started their game against York City at the beginning of the summer, with NUFC journalist Lee Ryder stating that the club ‘hold a lot of hopes’ for him.

And that is why when news of his departure reached them on social media, there were a number of Newcastle fans who weren’t pleased to hear it:

“What’s the point of our academy”

“You must be joking?! C’mon he looked really decent in pre-season. This must mean we are getting a centre-back on loan then? Now having only 5 available ones when playing with a back 3… we always struggle with injuries at the back.”
“I swear he was being considered for a squad number this season? Why League One? Surely Championship considering he is what 22? Poor from us. Our loans are always so underwhelming. Good luck to him anyway.”
“He’s been brilliant all pre-season and this is his thanks. Laughable that we don’t put our trust in youngsters these days… we either sell them off or loan them out constantly.”
“This makes no sense!”
“Baffled by this one. ANOTHER one out the door ! Aye it’s a loan but still !!!!! Our squad is wafer-thin as it is man !”

Do you think Newcastle will get relegated if they don't sign any players this summer?

Let’s see if this season is a good one for him in terms of his development, and whether or not it could lead to a better chance for him later down the line.
