A lot of Newcastle United fans have flooded to a tweet from Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, who has revealed an interesting claim on a potential transfer deal benefitting the Tyneside club.

Former Newcastle striker is expected to join Premier League side Southampton from Blackburn Rovers in a deal believed to be worth in the region of £15m.

Would you have taken Armstrong back at NUFC?

According to Downie, Newcastle are set to benefit from 40% of the profit from the sale after selling the 24-year-old striker back in 2018.

The striker excelled in the Championship with Blackburn, having netted 28 goals over the course of the 2020/21 season, in which he made 40 appearances for Tony Mowbray’s side (via Transfermarkt).

What exactly did these have to say?

“£11m pounds made from a sell-on clause Ashley Masterclass”

“Nowt wrong with that it’s called clever bit of business 8 mil for a loan player”
“Transfer Sell-On Clause 2021. Woo Hooooooo!!!!!!”

In shock that Newcastle were actually organised enough to include a sell-on clause. Doesn’t sound like us at all #nufc
Sell-on clause champions, you’ll never sing that. #NUFC

The striker made 21 appearances for the Toon’s first team during his spell at the club, but was unable to find the back of the net in those appearances despite netting 17 in 26 appearances for the U23s side (via Transfermarkt).

Going by the reaction of these fans, it appears they have been left pleasantly surprised by their club planning for the future when selling Armstrong three years ago they are now set to profit from a healthy sum of money.
