Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy believes that the club have treated goalkeeper Freddie Woodman poorly throughout his spell at St James’ Park.

The goalkeeper will begin the season as the club’s first-choice stopper, per Steve Bruce, as the club prepare to take on West Ham United this weekend.

The 24-year-old has gone on loan to a number of clubs during his time at the Magpies, playing for Hartlepool United, Crawley Town, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen and Swansea City.

Kennedy insists that there have been a number of disagreements between the club and Woodman over their plans for him, when it comes to potentially letting him leave on loan or forcing him to stay at the club.

In total, Woodman has only made four first-team appearances for the club, playing three times in the FA Cup in 2018/19 and once in the FA Cup the season prior, and is yet to make his Premier League debut.

Kennedy said: “The treatment of Freddie Woodman at Newcastle United hasn’t been great. The contract situations over the years, where they’ve had wrangles, issues with going out on loan, not being allowed to go out on loan, lots of things like that.

“It all sort of equates to the lad probably should already have another 50, 60 games under his belt because he probably missed a season of good loan time. He’s 24 now.”
