A tough-tackling midfielder like Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury could get fans at St. James’ Park jumping, former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey has told This Is Futbol.

Choudhury is currently being linked with a move to the Magpies as Steve Bruce looks to bolster his options in the middle of the pitch.

According to The Athletic, the 23-year-old is firmly in the Newcastle manager’s thoughts and was someone he attempted to sign on loan back in January.

Does Bruce need a player like Choudhury?

Choudhury is an aggressive tackler to say the least, frustrating the likes of Jurgen Klopp and even Bruce himself with challenges he has made in the past against their respective players.

But it is the kind of bite Howey believes would be warmly welcomed at St. James’ Park. On the rumours linking Choudhury to his former club, Howey said:

“If you can attract a player that I think is a decent player, but that’s my personal opinion, then it can only be good for the squad.

“If you make a good challenge, then Newcastle fans will jump up and be delighted with that, with the commitment.

“He’s got really good Premier League experience and he’s at a top club in Leicester, so obviously he would be a decent signing.”

Southampton are another side who have been credited with an interest in Choudhury, so Newcastle could face competition in their pursuit of the former England U21 international.
