Michael Ball insists Manchester City do not need to defend their spending this summer.

The former City star has been left surprised by criticism the club have been facing after they broke the British transfer record to secure the signing of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa.

Indeed, City triggered the release clause in his contract, which stood at £100m, to bring him into the club, and he made his Premier League debut in the shock 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

That loss was all the more headline-grabbing because of City’s reported interest in signing Harry Kane.

The striker has already been the subject of a bid worth over £100m but it would take a bigger fee than City paid for Grealish to secure the signature of the England captain.

Ball, though, insists that it has been known for some time that City have immense resources, and does not think they should have to defend themselves as a result.

Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, Ball said: “It shocks me a little bit that they’ve got to defend why they’ve spent 100 million pounds.

“We know Manchester City have got a lot of money. They spent a lot of money since these new owners have come to the football club, and their own resources.”
