Steve Howey believes Brendan Rodgers is under pressure to deliver and could face the sack if he fails to lead Leicester City into the Champions League next season.

Rodgers has been in the Foxes’ dugout since February 2019, when he walked away from Scottish giants Celtic to succeed Claude Puel.

Leicester missed out on a place in European football’s leading competition after a heavy final day defeat to Tottenham Hotspur saw them drop out of the Premier League’s top four last season.

It was the second consecutive disappointment, having narrowly failed to clinch a Champions League spot in the previous campaign. The Foxes spent 567 days in the Premier League’s top four over the last two terms and have failed to get over the line on both occasions.

Although Rodgers led Leicester to their first ever FA Cup triumph thanks to a 1-0 win over Chelsea in the Wembley final less than three months ago, former Foxes defender Howey believes the Northern Irishman is under pressure to deliver at the third time of asking.

Who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Leeds United at Anfield in September?

Speaking exclusively to TIF, he said: “Ultimately, owners have meetings with the manager and they will express their expectations.

“It’s never an easy ride for a manager and there have always got to be expectations. We did ever so well last year but we didn’t get in the Champions League. We have to get in next year.

“Will he be under pressure? Of course, because managers are under pressure all the time.”
