On the latest edition of  The Daily Leeds on YouTube, Joe Wainman spoke at length about the links between Leeds United and Matheus Cunha.

Leeds have been able to bring in three new signings this summer, although one of them – Jack Harrison – had spent the last three seasons on loan at Elland Road, but that has not stopped links suggesting Marcelo Bielsa could move for another attacking option in Cunha.

Do you want Leeds to sign Cunha this summer?

The Brazilian has starred for Hertha Berlin in the 18 months he’s been with the German side, scoring 13 goals and registering 10 assists, but he may have increased the interest in his services this summer as he netted three times for Brazil on their way to winning an Olympic gold medal.

Wainman gave his thoughts on the links to Cunha.

“There were reports saying in Germany that Leeds United are one of the teams that Matheus Cunha is destined for; they do believe he’s going to leave Hertha Berlin.

“I’m not so sure, and I’ve said for quite a while now, that I believe he stays there and then he will be due for a bidding war next summer. I don’t think he’s got long on his deal, I don’t think Leeds United have the funds to be able to entertain that deal.

“We know that Zenit St. Petersburg are after him – I think Liverpool have even enquired about his services as well. Leeds are linked, but I just don’t see it happening, I think it’s out of our reach. I know that will disappoint a lot of people, because everyone’s big on him and he would be that marquee signing.

“He’s a player where you go, ‘yeah, I’m having that’. But, Phil Hay said they’ve [Leeds] been saying no to the Cunha rumours all summer.”

TIF Thoughts on Cunha to Leeds links…

If Leeds were able to bring in Cunha, it could be an intelligent signing as he can play as either a wide player or as a striker, so that would offer cover for the likes of Raphinha, Harrison and Patrick Bamford this season.

Bringing in someone who has recently won a gold medal could add a fresh winner’s mentality as well as adding depth and quality, as their current backup options in Tyler Roberts and Helder Costa only managed four Premier League goals between them last season.
