Leeds United fans have been reacting to news surrounding Kalvin Phillips that has emerged ahead of their clash with Everton this weekend.

According to journalist Adam Pope, speaking at his press conference today, Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa revealed that the 25-year-old is ‘getting closer’ to starting games again ahead of the visit of the Toffees this weekend, whilst also noting that he ‘felt Phillips did not need extra playing time with U23s at Palace this week’.

Phillips, of course, is still recovering from his time at this summer’s European Championship, where he started every game and played all bar 25 minutes as England made it all the way to the final, and given the intense workload that Bielsa puts on his players, you can’t be too cautious when it comes to getting him back to full fitness.

But when the fans saw the news about Phillips from Pope, they weren’t too impressed, with many of them demanding to see the midfielder back on the pitch as soon as possible:

“He has to start no ifs or buts”

“To be honest a half-fit Kalvin is better than anyone else at the club in that position.”
“Getting close?? Grrr don’t get it, start him!…it’s imperative to set up of team. Rice, Shaw, Maguire all made it last week…”
“Getting closer? Didn’t need extra playing time? This makes no sense our midfield is nothing without him. If he doesn’t play I can’t see anything but another defeat”
“I mean Kalvin with one leg is better than anything needs to start Saturday, especially for the atmosphere of walking out to a packed Elland Road”
“Phillips starts or we lose, simple as.”

Will Kalvin Phillips be a one-club man?

Given how important he is to this Leeds side, you can certainly understand their frustration but ultimately it’s in Bielsa’s hands whether or not he gets the nod this weekend.
