Former All Leeds TV pundit Joe Wainman has hailed Marcelo Bielsa’s record when it comes to improving players at Elland Road.

Leeds enjoyed a highly successful first season back in the Premier League, as the club sealed a top-half finish and were never in the conversation when it came to relegation.

The Whites have been active in the transfer market this summer and have signed left-back Junior Firpo from Barcelona, winger Jack Harrison on a permanent deal from Manchester City after a number of loan spells, and goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson from Norwegian side Valerenga.

The club missed out on the signing of Conor Gallagher, however, as he opted to join Crystal Palace on loan from Chelsea instead.

Wainman, though, remains confident that the club will continue to improve, much like the players under Bielsa’s tutelage.

Indeed, he cites the example of Kalvin Phillips, who has become a key player for both Leeds and England in recent months, despite fans previously wanting him to move on in favour of keeping Ronaldo Vieira, who currently plays for Sampdoria and is being linked with Sheffield United.

JustJoe Football Show host Wainman said: “I just look at the improvement that Bielsa’s made for individuals within the Leeds set-up.

“I mean, Kalvin Phillips, a lot of fans would’ve kept Ronaldo Vieira and maybe moved Kalvin on and then Kalvin was one of the standout performers for England in the Euros, so it shows you the trajectory that a player can have under Bielsa.”
