Former Everton star Michael Ball believes that Tom Davies’ place in the starting XI may be under threat after the club were linked with defensive midfielder Sander Berge.

The club have been credited with an interest in signing the Sheffield United star in this transfer window.

Ball believes that any deal to sign Berge would take place late in the transfer window, with manager Rafael Benitez set to give his players a chance to impress before bringing in reinforcements.

Davies has been with the Toffees since 2017 and has made a total of 151 appearances for the club in the centre of midfield, scoring six goals and laying on seven assists. He is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt.

The 23-year-old made just 17 starts in the Premier League last season under the management of Carlo Ancelotti, and Ball thinks his future is now somewhat in doubt due to the club’s identification of midfield as a weak spot in this transfer window.

Speaking to This Is Futbol, he said: “My concern with that, not for Sander, is for the players already at the club, players like Tom Davies and so.

“It’s whether Everton can possibly move players out as well or whether Rafa can trust Tom Davies to do a job. I think that one again could be one later on in the window, see how the next couple of games go and see who’s sort of stepping up to the plate from the current club at this moment in time.”
