Liam Hatfield, who covers Midlands clubs for the Express and Star, has told This is Futbol that the signing of Danny Ings has all-but ended Aston Villa’s interest in Tammy Abraham.

The Chelsea striker, who enjoyed a highly successful loan spell with Villa during their promotion campaign in 2018-2019, has been a target of Dean Smith’s all summer.

However, Chelsea have slapped a £40m price-tag on Abraham, who’s career at his boyhood club appears to be over having fallen out of favour since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard.

But Smith opted to bring in Danny Ings in one of the best kept secrets in recent years last week, which Hatfield believes has put an end to their pursuit of their former loanee.

First up in this Gareth Barry quiz, which club did Villa sign the midfielder from?

Villa predominantly play one up front under Smith, leaving Ings to provide competition for Ollie Watkins, ruling out any potential move for Abraham.

Hatfield told This is Futbol:

“It would be a lot to outlay on two strikers when you’ve already got one at the club. I would be very surprised for it to happen now. Villa’s interest in Tammy has ended there, maybe they decided between the two and opted for Ings.”
