Steve Howey believes that Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is doing an excellent job and the club can push towards the European places.

After an 11th-place finish in the Premier League last season, manager Dean Smith has entered the transfer market this summer and strengthened his side bringing in Leon Bailey, Emi Buendia, Ashley Young, Axel Tuanzebe and Danny Ings.

Villa massively improved last season from the season before, finishing six places higher and 20 points better off, with Howey full of praise for manager Dean Smith, telling This is Futbol: “I think Dean Smith’s doing excellent. They did quite well last season, you’ve just got to build and build and build and I think that’s what they’re trying to do.

“I think Aston Villa are a team who behind the scenes it seems as though they’re assembling a decent squad there.”

Whilst Villa have already been active in the transfer market, they are also linked with Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse and Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell.

According to Sky Sports, Villa had a £25m bid turned down by Southampton for Ward-Prowse last month and if they want to land Todd Cantwell the Canaries are holding out for £40m-£50m according to Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth.

Aston Villa are having a brilliant summer recruitment wise bringing in players who have played in European football previously and after improvement on the pitch in terms of where they have finished in the Premier League, everybody connected with the club will be hoping the same happens again this upcoming season and they’re competing for the European places.
