Aston Villa journalist Matt Maher has given his view on claims that Todd Cantwell could be about to join the club.

With Aston Villa set to miss out on a lot of attacking firepower following the departure of Jack Grealish to Manchester City, it’s no surprise to see that they are on the lookout for someone to replace him. Cantwell would certainly fit that description, having racked up six goals and eight assists in all competitions for Norwich City last season.

Who is currently Villa's record signing?

There have been some reports to suggest that Villa are taking a look at him this summer, but speaking on the E&S Villa Podcast, Maher claimed that those reports were wide of the mark, and that Villa are not trying to add Cantwell to their array of talent that they have already brought in this summer:

“Everybody knows that Villa have got big money in the bank, and they’re getting linked with this, that and everyone.

“I mean, Todd Cantwell is one that is not going to happen, they’re not in for him. But that doesn’t stop dozens and dozens of stories being run online a week saying that ‘Villa target Todd Cantwell’.”

It certainly would be a bizarre move for Norwich City to make happen, especially considering that they have already sold them Emiliano Buendía. To then go and sell them someone who ranked second in terms of assists and joint-third in goals last term for the Canaries would be a rather risky move on their part.

That’s not to say that Villa shouldn’t be looking at him at some point in the future. If the signings that they have made this season don’t totally work out, and they need to find some other options to replace Grealish, then signing someone like Cantwell next summer should certainly be an option for them.

But as for this present moment in time, it makes them look a little bit greedy when it comes to Norwich City players if nothing else.
