The Athletic’s Gregg Evans has provided an update on Aston Villa’s plans in the final stages of this summer’s transfer market.

So far, Villa have signed a collection of high-quality players on a permanent basis. The list includes Danny Ings, Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey and Ashley Young – as well as Axel Tuanzebe on loan.

Of course, much of this activity has been funded by the £100m sale of former captain Jack Grealish, though the club’s spending may not be quite finished yet.

While discussing the topic on 1874, Evans outlined exactly what he expects from the club before the window shuts at the end of this month.

Evans explained the situation, saying: “It wouldn’t surprise me if Villa were done. But I do still think that they will get one more signing. I’d hope it would be in defensive midfield. Look, that area is very packed, isn’t it?”

He then elaborated on his feelings, adding: “So look, I do think Villa will try and do one, but I’m not 100% sure whether they’ll get it over the line. Fingers crossed they do because, you know, that little bit more competition in there might help.”

TIF thoughts on Aston Villa’s transfer plans…

Currently, Villa have a number of options in the middle of the park – including John McGinn, Douglas Luiz, and Marvelous Nakamba.

Indeed, McGinn and Nakamba were trusted by Dean Smith to start the club’s first game of the new Premier League season. But after that fixture ended in victory for Watford, Smith may look to bolster that area of the pitch.

One centre-mid to be linked with the club heavily this summer is Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse, but it looks like that deal probably won’t happen this summer.

Perhaps Villa will find an alternative option elsewhere, or else they’ll just have to rely on what they’ve got.
