The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare has made a bold prediction about Arsenal’s Bernd Leno if the can club finalise the potential arrival of Aaron Ramsdale.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with Sheffield United goalkeeper Ramsdale all summer, but at last, the saga looks to be reaching its conclusion.

Indeed, Arsenal have reportedly agreed to pay an initial £24m fee for the player, which should see him sign for the club in the coming days.

With a new ‘keeper coming into the side, Eccleshare has claimed this could spell bad news for current No 1, Leno.

While speaking on The Totally Football Show, the journalist said: “I think the way Leno has been playing he’s looked pretty uncertain. I don’t think anyone would be too surprised if Ramsdale did become the number one reasonably quickly.

“Especially as Leno, I think he’s got two years left on his deal, he doesn’t want to extend it, Arsenal don’t want to extend it.”

TIF thoughts on Aaron Ramsdale and Bernd Leno…

Ramsdale was named Cherries’ Player of the Year while at Bournemouth, and then won the equivalent award at Sheffield United the following year.

Despite criticism of his form across the past couple of seasons, these accolades prove how valued he has been at each of the Premier League clubs he has played for.

At the back-end of last season, Leno was listed as one of a few key players who reportedly wanted to leave Arsenal. If this is true and is still the case, then Mikel Arteta may favour Ramsdale as his No 1 in the near future (providing the transfer is completed).

In the meantime, Leno looks set to start against Chelsea this weekend as Arsenal aim to get their first win of the Premier League season.
