Leeds United podcaster Gary Devonport has been sharing his thoughts on the possibility of the Yorkshire club making a move to sign Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio during the current summer transfer window.

This comes after Devonport made a guest appearance on one of Joe Wainman’s recent videos on his YouTube channel where he spoke about a range of topics concerning Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Leeds' all-time top Premier League goalscorer is Mark Viduka but how many did he score?

After it was recently reported that Leeds are one of the clubs interested in signing Asensio this summer, Devonport had this to say on the matter.

He said: “I think they’ll have a tough sell for Marco Asensio, bearing in mind he’s been at Real, and he’s played in the Champions League and stuff like that, to say ‘well, you’re going come in and play second fiddle to Jack Harrison’.

“I think that’ll be the big sell, like, how much does he back himself to come and shift Jack Harrison, who, to be honest, I think has been very impressive in pre-season. I think he’s been the highlight for me in pre-season, and he looks like he’s really got the bit between his teeth.

“It’s a tough sell, but the flip-side of that is [Victor] Orta can approach Asensio and say, look, we’ve got a manager who’s got a track record of improving players, you’ve kind of lost your way a little bit; if we take him on loan, or whatever it may be, we’ll get you back to where you want to be kind of thing and, if you play well, he’ll get a chance.

“He comes with a name, he’s a quite well-known name, he’s got a pedigree.”

Real Madrid signed Asensio back in the 2015 summer transfer window from fellow Spanish club RCD Mallorca for a fee of £3.51 million.

TIF Thoughts on Gary Devonport’s comments on a potential Leeds move for Asensio…

Given how the 25-year-old winger, who is currently valued at £31.5 million, has made 193 appearances for Carlo Ancelotti’s side across all competitions, in which he has managed to score 37 goals and provide 22 assists along the way, it’s easy to see why the Whites are apparently interested in signing the Spaniard this summer.

Would you like to see Leeds make a move for Asensio this summer?

No

However, in our view, considering how Raphinha ended the 2020/21 season as the club’s highest-rated player according to WhoScored with an overall performance rating of 7.22/10, and the fact that Jack Harrison, who the club signed permanently this summer, ended the same season with eight goals and eight assists to his name, compared to the five goals and two assists that Asensio managed to rack up in La Liga last season.

Therefore, we feel that a potential move for Asensio may not be something the Yorkshire club should be looking at, especially if he would cost a significant amount of money to sign, so perhaps it depends on whether Marcelo Bielsa feels he can get the most out of the Spaniard.
