Sunderland fans have been reacting to the latest contract news surrounding the Black Cats as Luke O’Nien put pen to paper and agreed to a new deal with the club.

Sunderland’s official Twitter account announced the news that O’Nien had agreed to a new three-year deal that will keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2024. This comes as the Black Cats feared losing him after his contract ran out on 1st July.

Fans of the Black Cats headed to Twitter to give their thoughts on O’Nien’s new deal…

Judging by the responses, many Sunderland fans have been left delighted by the news.

O’Nien joined the Black Cats in 2018 from Wycombe Wanderers and his versatility provides a very good option for Sunderland, with him able to play in numerous different positions throughout his career.

The 26-year-old, whose main position is right-back, played in four different positions for the Black Cats last season, playing mainly at centre-back, featuring there on 25 occasions.

O’Nien made 44 appearances for Sunderland across all competitions last year and his departure would arguably have left Lee Johnson’s side with a big hole to fill.
