Football finance expert, Kieran Maguire, has been talking about Sheffield Wednesday’s potential points deduction on the latest episode of The Price of Football podcast.
The Owls failed to recover from a points deduction last season for breaching the EFL’s profitability and sustainability regulations, a deduction that was ultimately halved, although this didn’t help them beat the drop into League One.

Off-field antics have appeared to often overshadow what happens on the pitch, such as players not being paid on time last season. In more positive news though, all players currently contracted to the club are now up to date in terms of being paid with the club managing to catch up with its own spending.
Despite now appearing to be up to date in paying its players, that has not stopped talk of a points deduction looming large, which is something Maguire spoke about on his podcast.
(52:21) “It now appears that Sheffield Wednesday have a suspended six points deduction and Derby County have a suspended three points deduction on the back of failure to pay wages on time over the course of the last, I think 12 to 18 months.
“I believe that Sheffield Wednesday’s deduction will be halved if they get to the start of 2022 and do pay their wages.”

It would be a hammer blow for Darren Moore and the club if they were handed yet another points deduction as League One is an extremely tough league to get out of with the likes of Sunderland, Portsmouth, Ipswich Town and Wigan Athletic just some of the clubs who have been in the top flight this millennium, in England’s third tier.
The Owls would require a superb run of results if they were to mount a serious promotion push if they were to receive yet another points deduction.
This could prove to be very difficult with the club struggling to conduct much transfer business, with Moore only able to bring in one free agent and a loan signing so far this summer.
