Pundit Alex Rae has recently slammed Celtic’s recruitment, focusing on their failure to sign a new right-back.
Anthony Ralston had started for the Bhoys in their Champions League qualifying game against Midtjylland. The Scotsman also signed a new deal at the club recently, confirming his presence at the club till the summer of 2022.
Rae appeared on the latest episode of Clyde Superscoreboard and talked about Celtic’s failure to sign a right-back this summer. He refused to blame Ralston for having to feature for the club, saying that there are bigger issues than the defender at Celtic and pointed towards poor recruitment.
Should right-back be a priority for Celtic?
He stated: “If you go back to [Jeremie] Frimpong leaving, you have the best part of seven months. Seven months Celtic have had to identify one or two right-backs to bring in because they got good money for Frimpong.
“So seven months down the line, there’s not even any sign of anybody coming in the door. So it’s not Ralston’s fault that he’s been thrown into the mix; he’s delighted because it’s an opportunity to try and showcase what he can do. So for me, there’s a bigger issue here.”
TIF Thoughts on Celtic signing a right-back…
Ralston was barely featuring for the Bhoys in the 2020/21 campaign, as he played just one game in the Premiership, which suggests that he perhaps isn’t good enough to play regularly for the club.
The club’s move for Sacha Boey has fallen through because of issues surrounding the agents involved in the deal, and that should be a blow in the club’s hunt for a right-back.
They’ve also been linked with a move for Brandon Soppy, but they find themselves in the race with some other clubs as well.
So the Bhoys should act soon if they want another right-back. If they have only Ralston, it may not help them this season.
