West Ham United insider @ExWHUemployee has been discussing the latest details concerning a potential move from the east London club to sign Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard this summer.

This comes after Ex co-hosted a recent edition of The West Ham Way Podcast where he spoke about a variety of subjects concerning David Moyes’ side.

Who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Leeds United at Anfield in September?

On the subject of West Ham’s interest in signing Lingard, who joined the Hammers on a loan deal last season, Ex had this to say.

He said: “From what I could gather, West Ham will still try to convince him, but I’m not sure.

“We’d have to put in quite a big bid to get Manchester United to accept, and then we’d have to be quite adamant of a decent wage, and first-team guarantees, which obviously he would get at West Ham for him.

“The way I can see this panning out, and it depends if West Ham pull the plug on it earlier than this, but to actually get towards the end of the window and see whether he’s featured for Manchester United much or not and if he’s been stuck on the bench and barely played, Moyes might be able to come in and say ‘look, come back here and come back and play first-team football.’

“We’ll see what happens – but at the moment, the transfer is not looking that likely.”

As a product of Manchester United’s youth system, the 28-year-old, who is currently valued at £19.8 million, has made 210 senior appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions, in which he has managed to score 33 goals and provide 20 assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Ex’s comments on a potential permanent transfer for Lingard…

Taking into account how the Englishman managed to score nine goals and provide five assists in 16 appearances for the Hammers during his recent loan spell at the London Stadium, it’s understandable, in our view, that the club would want to sign him again this summer on a permanent basis this time and persist on doing so as Ex discussed.

Do you think West Ham should give up on trying to sign Lingard?

No

No

However, with Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently claiming that Lingard will be in his plans for the upcoming season, this suggests to us that it would be very difficult for West Ham to take him away from the club on a permanent basis this summer, especially if Lingard would prefer to stay at Old Trafford – so playing the long game may indeed be the best strategy for the Hammers.
